Software Engineer (Freelance)
Upwork & Independent Consulting
Jan 2022 - Sept 2022
- Delivered unique software solutions for clients across desktop, embedded, and mobile domains. Managed full project lifecycles independently from scoping and architecture to delivery and support.
- Delivered 15+ products across many different application domains.
- Built Qt/QML desktop applications for clients requiring cross-platform, performant UIs.
- Developed embedded system interfaces integrating hardware sensors with user-facing dashboards.
- Applied root cause analysis and systematic debugging to resolve complex client-reported issues.
Chief Innovation Officer (Full-time)
The AFECS Ltd.
Aug 2020 - Sep 2022
- Led technology strategy and product innovation at AFECS, driving the company's engineering direction from concept through delivery. Owned the full product lifecycle, from client requirements to shipped software, across desktop, embedded, and IoT domains.
- Defined and executed the technical roadmap, making architectural decisions across C++, Qt/QML, Python, and embedded Linux platforms.
- Built and delivered client-facing solutions including UI-heavy desktop applications, IoT dashboards, and hardware-integrated systems.
- Managed and mentored a small engineering team, establishing code standards, review processes, and delivery workflows.
- Drove root cause analysis and problem-solving frameworks that reduced project delivery delays and improved product reliability.
Research Assistant & Data Analyst (Contract)
PSRM Consultants
Feb 2022 - Jun 2022
- Field research and data engineering for a hospital equipment study across Kenyan health facilities, a joint engagement with PSRM Consultants.
- Built the data-collection platform that digitised hospital equipment asset registries, replacing paper-based tracking and indexing over 5,000 pieces of equipment.
- Developed analysis models that turned raw facility data into actionable findings on equipment availability and condition.
- Led field data-collection teams across 22+ hospitals across the country, and reported findings to project stakeholders.
Lead Engineering Team
TibaVent Project
Mar 2020 - Sept 2021
- Part of a 15-member team that built Kenya's first locally manufactured mechanical ventilator during COVID-19
- Developed the Qt/QML touchscreen control application with serial communication to ventilator hardware
- Built the C++ monitoring server for remote device data ingestion and logging
- System passed government quality testing; recognized with UN Kenya Person of the Year 2020
Software Engineer (Part-time)
Chebui Agrovet
Jan 2019 - Dec 2020
- Designed and built a Point-of-Sale system for a working agrovet business, my first end-to-end delivery for a paying client.
- Built the full application: interface design, database schema, and the sales and inventory logic behind it.
- Integrated the system with the business's existing operations so staff could adopt it without disrupting daily trade.
Education
MSc Computer Science
University of East London, UK
2023 - 2025
- Dissertation: MantisBase, an embeddable C++20 Backend-as-a-Service delivering auto-generated REST APIs, JWT auth, and SSE streaming in one portable binary; released as open source (30+ releases, mantisbase.com).
- Focus areas: advanced software engineering, cloud computing, data analytics, and AI & machine vision, completed alongside full-time engineering work.
BSc Biomedical Engineering
Kenyatta University, Kenya
2016 - 2022
- Led development of TIBAVENT, Kenya's first locally designed mechanical ventilator (Qt/C++ on embedded Linux); built the clinical UI and the real-time control layer; the work earned UN Person of the Year 2020 and a Head of State Commendation (HSC), Civilian Division.
- Contributed hardware design and firmware to a 1U CubeSat with the Kenya Space Agency; power budgeting, comms protocols, and fault-tolerant embedded software and to the DLP2 learning tablet programme.
- Grounding in electrical circuits, embedded systems, control and instrumentation, and medical device design; the origin of the low-level, systems-first approach I still bring to C++ and infrastructure work.
